THE COMMUNITY

Somerset Park was the first neighborhood occupied in Levittown, N.J.  It is somehwat less of a single, contiguous neighborhood than others in Levittown: it is geographically spread out over five separate, but adjoining groups of homesites, each of which is separated by one of Willingboro's major arterial roadways.  In fact, the layout of this neighborhood reflects the pattern of construction as Somerset Park contains three houselines--1958, 1959, and 1960.

Photo 1  The homes in Levittown, N.J. are generally within the self-contained street network of each neighborhood.  However, a few of the homes front onto the arterial system, like this group of five homes on Sunset Road, which adjoin interior homesites within a section of Somerset Park.  (There is also one Levitt home on Charleston Road; see House C under The Houses section below.) Photo 1  Rear of House A.  Although by 1954, Levitt had relocated the kitchen of its Jubilee Cape Cod model at Levittown, Pa. to the rear of the home and the living room to the front, the 1958-1960 Cape Cod homes of Levittown, N.J. revived the Levitt design of locating the kitchen at the front of the house and the living room at the rear. House C1 (4-Bedroom Colonial introduced December 1958)
Photo 1  This home is the single Levitt home fronting onto Charleston Road, one of the arterial roadways traversing Willingboro.  It backs to interior homesites within the Somerset Park neighborhood, and is grouped in a line of several older homes along Charleston Road.  This homesite was undoubtedly one of the higher priced homesites "particularly suited for doctors, dentists, or professional people," as advertised in the opening ad (see Philadelphia Inquirer Ad 1 under the Levittown, N.J. in the News section at the Levittown, N.J. home page).  Other homes front on Charleston Road at its easterly end in the Hawthorne Park section. (2/11/2005)
